Word processing software is used to "process" information that has been entered into the computer. Word processing is basically easy to learn and use, it allows students to refine and personalize their work, it promotes equality in final products, and better prepares them for the workforce. Because of these and other reasons, the National Education Technology Standards for Students (NETS) suggests that students in all grades use word processing at developmentally appropriate levels.
Basic word-processing programs allow students to become independent publishers of ideas and opinions. When supplemented by other applications, word processing becomes a particularly powerful learning tool. Using graphics allows authors to illustrate their stories. E-mail provides opportunities for "peer review" and group editing, and the Internet allows students to publish their stories and to share results of their research or problem-solving.
When students use a word processor for their assignments, they are better able to actively engage in the learning process and higher levels of thinking. Thus, the students reinforce their learning and continue to build their knowledge and skills.
